A battery for your holiday home in Mallorca: what it does while you are away
When a house sits empty for weeks, the panels keep producing and almost everything is sold to the grid at a low price. Here is what a battery adds to a second home, when it really pays off and what grant is available in 2026.
The problem: producing when nobody is home
With the house empty, consumption is low (fridge, alarm, router, pool pump) and almost all solar output goes to the grid. Under Spain’s simplified net billing, exported power is paid far below the price of the power you buy: in our calculations we use about €0.06 per kWh exported versus about €0.18 per kWh bought.
What the battery does while you are away
A well-sized battery does three jobs in a holiday home:
- Stores daytime output for night-time loads: fridge, alarm, cameras, router or the pool pump.
- Backup during power cuts: if the system is set up for it, it keeps essential circuits (alarm, fridge, communications) running, which matters when nobody is there to reset anything.
- Remote monitoring: the app shows production, charge and consumption, and alerts you if something goes wrong.
Is it worth it if the house is empty most of the year?
It depends on how much you use it. If you spend only a few weeks a year there, the battery’s savings are small and its main value is backup and peace of mind. If you stay for months or rent it out seasonally, consumption rises and the battery pays back sooner.
That is why we do not size it by guesswork: we look at your recent bills, when you are there and what must keep running when nobody is, and propose the capacity that makes sense.
2026 grant: 45% of the battery
The Balearic Government’s FACTOR 2026 programme covers 45% of the battery cost for private individuals, second homes included. A 13.5 kWh Tesla Powerwall 3 starts at €9,500 excluding VAT, so the grant would be around €4,275.
Spanish income-tax deductions for energy efficiency, on the other hand, require a main or rented home, so they do not usually apply to a second home kept for your own use.
Even if you are not on the island
We coordinate the survey, installation and registration even if you live outside Mallorca, and send you photos and the commissioning report. We work in English, German, Spanish and Catalan.
